 What is Autism Works?

Community Gatepath operated the Autism Works program from April 2010 – September 2011 under contract with the CA Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) as a part of ARRA funds. The contract provided employment services (traditional/competitive individual placement) for young adults, age 18 to 25, with high functioning autism. Autism Works services included a custom social/vocational evaluation, weekly interview seminars, job placement services and job coaching. Services concentrated on social skills development in relation to employment. During the contract, Gatepath Employment Services employees received extensive training on autism and employment. Job development included intensive employer account management activities, resulting in multiple job placements at some employer sites.

Bobby with Cart Portrait.JPGDuring the Autism Works contract, Community Gatepath received 24 referrals from DOR. Of those 24 referrals, 3 were not ready for competitive employment. During the contract, 18 were placed in community based jobs. Employers who hired Autism Works participants included theaters, a grocery store, a car dealership, food service providers, and retail clothing/department stores.

During the contract, the Job Preparation Outcome Matrix (JPOM) was created as a comprehensive checklist to identify the aspects of pre-employment that a student/young adult needs to be familiar with to be prepared as possible to enter the competitive job market. The JPOM is a toolkit available for parents, educators and other service providers. For more detail on the Autism Works program, download the Outcome Evaluation.
